July 10th - Shibuya and Asakusa
written on Saturday, September 5, 2015 @ 11:47 PM ✈

Note: Best read in conjunction with the album photos.
Today's post goes from this photo here to here --- log in to see them.

Side note: When my diary entries say "Rosemar" or "Rosemarbum" these are actually not typos, it's how I actually refer to her LOL (happy reading!)

Fun fact: Australia has the cheapest McDonald's soft serves at 50c (sometimes it's 30c, they can never decide). In Japan, it's ¥100 and in Korea it's ₩1000 (but it might have been ₩800, my memory's shaky on that one).

We didn't end up waking until 9 and by we, I mean me and then shaking Rosemary awake. We left the house at 10:35-10:40 and got to Shibuya about 10:55.

First we went to the Hachiko statue and took photos, did the crossing and went to shibuya 109. So we probably got there about 11:20 and wandered the lower levels (and man, coloured mascara is so "in" right now in Japan, their colour selection is crazy --> it's not the photo we uploaded. Think of a typical nail polish rack you see in chemists etc. but instead it's mascara. Yeah.)

So funny story is after that we stopped at one of the yukata stores and I had no interest in getting one since I knew I wouldn't wear it, it's expensive etc etc. but most importantly I knew my parents would tell me off if I did (not sternly, but like "why'd you get that, what a waste" sort of feel). But we were in there for SO LONG until like 1pm because Rosemary was dead set on one and the lady helped her put it on but then Rosemary found this print that was "screaming out for me" (as in, suited me very well) and man do I hate it when Rosemary knows my tastes > > (Yeah on our trip we got to know each other's tastes too well). So yeah in the end I got it and we won't talk about how much it cost (but hey, the yukata is still cheaper than that other dress I bought that I posted about).

Anyway yeah we were in that shop for so long deliberating on various things... I spoke such poor Japanese to the first woman there cause Rosemary kept putting me on the spot making me ask random questions. Towards the end of our time there (after we had changed and tried on the yukata) a second lady shop assistant came into the shop and I was more adventurous with talking with her cause she wasn't there earlier to hear how bad my Japanese was LOL. Second lady also helped me to take off the yukata and that day I was wearing my cat eyes shirt and she said kawaii!! while gesturing at my cat shirt when she saw it haha.

Ah yes and about the coloured mascara Rosemary ended up buying all 3 colours there. Also since there wasn't any make-up remover I felt ridiculous wandering around the rest of the day with that electric blue mascara on. Rosemary even forgot about it and rubbed her eye vigorously by accident and was surprised when it didn't even budge.

We went to top level to eat lunch, rosemary got omelette curry and I got strawberry shaved ice (this is what my lunch is like in summer lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

Got to Asakusa maybe 5? Found our way to kaminarimon, went down Nakamise where Rosemary kept stopping to look at fans and then we finally got to Sensoji. THERE WERE HEAPS OF PEOPLE IT WAS NO JOKE. CAUSE IT'S SUMMER and like maybe 20+ people wore yukata. There were these weird orange plants that lots of people were carrying (it's the stuff hanging around the cat's neck in the photos), food stalls (like takoyaki, chocolate banana, dad's favourite yakisoba, other yaki things and more). Also it was super crowded you don't understand. The line to give an offering at the temple spanned all the way down the whole stairs and packed the whole staircase except the side. Was even a policeman at the bottom directing human traffic.

There was also the goldfish scooping game (typical of summer time). We ended up buying 豚玉焼き (buta-tamayaki, kind of like pork okonomiyaki) for "dinner" (wasn't really dinner but I didn't end up feeling hungry enough after to buy something else). It was super delicious and hot and we ended up sitting on the side staircase of sensoji to eat it lol cause a lot of people were doing it too. Last time when I came in winter that didn't happen, because there's a lot more people in summer and the atmosphere is more lively.

We left there maybe past 7:30 but can't be sure and took a long walk to tokyo sky tree cause we kept stopping for Rosemar's photos and to take detours around blocks to get there. Finally got there and it was 8:45 and we briefly looked through the tokyo sky tree shop which was about to close. We went to Mcdonald's for a soft serve and then we went all the way up to take a picture of sky tree. Went to another typical food souvenir shop before making our way back to Oshiage station then taking train home.

Got home about 10:30 and it's now 11:43.

After note: My parents practically facepalmed when they saw my yukata and I defended myself by saying I really wasn't going to get one. Honestly, if I didn't like the design so much I really wouldn't have because I knew they'd tell me off for getting "pointless stuff." But to be far, I can pay off the yukata with a week's worth of work so eh? And it's not like I make that many irrational purchases so yeah...

Also - Tokyo Sky Tree is case #1 of "oh we see it over there, but how do we get to it??" Maybe you guys will understand this ↂ ω ↂ
