Watched it in cinema today and it was really good. Be wary if you continue reading cause possible spoilers (though not plot wise, I'm going to talk about language).
* You can tell when they switch bodies not only because the character voice changes in tone, but because of the way they speak. When Mitsuha is inside Taki, he starts talking with "ya" as a sentence ending which is sort of country speak/dialect as opposed to the standard "desu" (polite) or "da" (informal) ending.
* Additionally, guys normally have a more "rough" way of speaking, and of course when Mitsuha is inside Taki's body he stops talking this way. So for example, janai (not) is standard, but guys might say janee (pronounced "janeh").
* In English, we only have one way of saying "I" so this part gets lost in the subs but when Mitsuha first wakes up in Taki's body, she refers to herself as watashi (usually used by females), therefore confusing Taki's friends. She corrects herself to watakushi which confuses Taki's friends further, as this is a super formal way of saying "I". She tries again and refers to herself as boku (used for males, but usually younger guys) and the friends remain confused until she goes ore??? to which they seem satisfied (ie. that's what Taki normally says). It's hard to explain properly but ore is normally used by guys but is more arrogant or rough.
* There was one point on screen where the subs talked about "kisses and hourglasses" but it was in white font by mistake instead of yellow, making it seem like it was said by Mitsuha but it was in fact the song lyrics. It also means unfortunately what Mitsuha really WAS saying didn't come up in the subs.
Also I'm generally good at knowing if a voice actor in an anime/movie/etc. has also voiced another character I'm familiar with. I can tell you a minor character is voiced by the same person who voices Kakashi in Naruto LOL.
Whenever I watch anime I don't watch it mindlessly but I'm really paying attention to try and improve on my Japanese. The subs usually come out first and you can read it faster before the character even says anything so as soon as I read the English I usually translate it to Japanese in my head and compare it to what the characters actually say!
I'd say I understood most of the movie without subs, except for the harder parts on meteorology and stuff like that. I got the musubi part though ^^
Oh and I'm surprised the movie makes guys cry? Cause I did tear up but not enough to actually cry hah...
